Leader-in-Training

Registration for Camp 2024 is Now Open!!

Being a Leader-in-Training (LIT) at Sunrise is an extremely unique experience for youth aged 13-16. This program provides leadership opportunities, enabling youth to gain and strengthen valuable skills. LIT’s will gain first-hand experience as they assist a group of campers while shadowing an experienced camp counsellor. In addition, LIT’s earn 40 volunteer hours per session.

LIT’s are expected to be engaged, participate fully in the program and help in all of the activities that their group undertakes. They must also:

• Enjoy and be comfortable working with children of all ages
• Be interested in furthering their leadership skills
• Be able to communicate openly with campers, peers and supervisors
• Be an appropriate role model for campers
• Behave in a mature, responsible manner at all times during camp

The cost of the LIT program is $30 for each 2-week session and includes training, mentorship, completion certificate, t-shirt and administration.

Leadership Opportunities

Each LIT will have at least two opportunities to develop independent leadership skills by planning, organizing and leading a group activity. The Camp Coordinator, Assistant Camp Coordinator and Counsellors serve as resource staff to provide LIT’s with assistance, guidance and feedback. Upon completion of the two-week session, each LIT will receive a written evaluation and a certificate.

Application Process

If you are interested in becoming an LIT at Camp Sunrise, please complete the LIT Application Form and submit it with your resume. Applicants are expected to come to Sunrise for a group interview (3 or 4 applicants/group). This gives LIT’s the chance to develop interview skills in a comfortable setting. The interview is also a time to meet the Camp Coordinator, enabling the coordinator to match each LIT with an appropriate counsellor and camper group, thus ensuring an enjoyable experience for the LIT.

Training Day

All LIT’s are expected to participate in a one-day orientation and training prior to the start of camp. The training day is led by the Camp Coordinator and will cover:
• Introduction to Sunrise
• Expectations of a Leader-in-Training
• Safety on the Farm
• Grooming and Tacking Horses
• Leading and Sidewalking
• Leadership skills
• Child Development/Behaviour
• Game Adaptation and Creativity

LIT’s will also receive a manual which will include resources on the above topics.
